The Loch Ard was an iron-hulled clipper ship of 1,693 tons, 263 feet in length and with masts 150 feet high. It had left Gravesend, England on 2 March, 1878 with a general cargo and 54 passengers and crew aiming to return from Australia with wool and wheat. The ship became wrecked in the early hours of June 1, 1878 when it hit a reef extending out from Mutton Bird Island near Port Campbell on the Great Ocean Road. Of the 54 souls aboard only two survived: Tom Pierce, an apprentice crewman, and Eva Carmichael, a passenger. Both were aged 18 years and were washed into what is now called Loch Ard Gorge. Eva had been travelling to Australia with her parents, three sisters and two brothers. All seven died in the wreck.
